Pagan Blog Project 2012 - Week 7 - Divination

This week my post for the Pagan Blog Project is the letter D and for me, D = Divination.

I found out some interesting historical facts about divination, as we all know Divination is the art of foretelling the future using different methods.  Divining the future has been used for centuries all around the world, each culture using a different form of divination to the next.  For example:-

  • Augur - During the times of ancient Rome there were priests called Augur. The Augur was tasked with the divination of the flight of birds. It was believed at the time that the birds gave an indication on the will of the gods.  The divination was undertaken by studying the breed of birds, noises, direction of flight and various other signals.
  • Hakata are pieces of bone, ivory or wood that were used by African witch doctors for divination. These different objects are inscribed with symbols that represent the signs of the zodiac. They are cast upon the ground by the witch doctor who then interprets their meaning.
  • Lecanomancy is a form of divination where a stone is thrown into a basin of water. The scryer will divinate by the sound the stone makes in the water and the images of the rippling water. Sometimes oil is used instead of a rock. In this case the scryer interprets the shapes of the oil floating on the water.
My favourite form of divination boils down to two things, my pendulum and my tarot cards, I have used a pendulum for many years, and love working with it, I have a very special amethyst egyptian pendulum that sits on my altar and I attune to it daily.  My favourite tarot deck is Linda Ravenscroft's Faerie Tarot, they are not only beautifully designed but easy to read too.
I have spent years practising my tarot readings on my friends and family, but it was only recently I thought about using them in spell craft.  A dear friend of mine has had much success using the tarot in her magical workings and puts it down to tarot being involved.  I will test this and report back.
So whats you're favourite form of divination and why? where have you had the most success or do you not 'do' divination at all?
